Brent Youths win £5,000 in the New Year’s Day Parade
Young people from Brent took part in the 26th New Year’s Day Parade on 1 January 2012 and won £5,000 for Brent Mayor’s chosen charities. More than half a million spectators lined the 2.2 mile (3.5km) route from Piccadilly to the Parliament to watch more than 8,500 performers, musicians, clowns and floats including US marching bands, cheerleaders and dancers representing 20 countries worldwide. The Parade started at 11.45am on Piccadilly through Trafalgar Square and Whitehall before ending at Parliament Square around 3 pm in front of Big Ben. The three hours of Live Satellite Coverage was beamed around the world.
At the heart of the London Parade there is a competition between the London Boroughs called 'The Let's Help London Challenge'. This year, nineteen London boroughs competed in the Challenge – with an amazing array of entries that reflected the event’s twin themes of The Olympic Games and Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Brent’s entry was to celebrate the cultural diversity and youth engagement which makes Brent a vibrant community. Their large silver arch, inspired by Wembley Stadium, and created by Brent Youth Volunteers, decorated with union jack colours, represented the unity and the costumes celebrated Brent’s diversity. A strong army of Dhol drummers from Alperton Community School delighted the enthusiastic crowd. These young people carried the heavy instruments while playing non-stop music for 3 hours. Harlesden based carnival costume maker, Mahogany, again made spectacular costumes for the Olympic and Diamond Jubilee themes. During the parade, young people wearing costumes symbolising the five Olympic rings and diamonds made formations to entertain the crowd. Both Councillor Aslam Choudry, Mayor of Brent and the Mayoress led the Brent’s entry. They were accompanied by the signs “Visit Wembley Visit Brent” - The website www.visitwembleyvisitbrent.com encourages Wembley visitors to visit other amazing places in Brent.
Brent Youth Volunteers have won 1st ,2nd 3rd, 5th and 7th place and a special prize of £21,000.
In Joint First place came Merton and The City of Westminster each receiving £7,000 for their respective mayoral charities. Brent won the competition two years ago and came second last year.

Finn McCool and the Salmon of Knowledge
In February 2010 we worked with Mahogany in Harlesden and made a GIANT Finn McCool and Salmon of Knowledge to help celebrate St. Patrick's Day in style! Our wonderful volunteers drummed on Bodhrans (Irish drums), dressed in amazing costumes and paraded both in central London and through the streets of Brent showing off the legend of Finn McCool and The Salmon of Knowledge.
We also ran a FINN McCOOL COMPETITION, which is now closed. We were overwhelmed with the quality of the entries and were hard pushed to choose the winners but, with the help of Tony Breslin from the Citizenship Foundation, we were able to decide on the winning entries which best illustrated the theme of Finn McCool and The Salmon of Knowledge. There are definitely some very talented young artists in Brent and well done to all of the winners - your winning illustrations will be posted here in the next few days.
